Biden directed the Commerce Department to investigate Chinese automotive technology, saying it could pose a national security risk. China reacted angrily, calling the investigation discriminatory and “weaponizing” trade issues.

Biden is concerned that China’s policies could flood U.S. markets with risks. The United States will focus on connected vehicles, and the Commerce Department will collect information during a 60-day public comment period. The Chinese Embassy in the United States expressed firm opposition, saying that this move would “weaponize” economic and trade issues.

Experts believe the move once again acknowledges the impact of critical technologies on economic growth and national security. The U.S. Manufacturing Alliance welcomed the move, calling for higher tariffs and limits on electric vehicle tax credits.
