South Korean media reported that LG Electronics and global tech giant Meta are joining forces to develop next-generation extended reality (XR) devices. LG Electronics announced on February 28 that it has officially begun strategic cooperation with Meta to accelerate the advancement of XR business.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited the LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul that day to discuss strengthening the XR partnership with LG Electronics. This is his first official visit since arriving via the Gimpo Business Aviation Center in Seoul the night before. It is also his first visit to South Korea in 10 years since 2013.

LG Electronics believes that the balance of equipment, platforms and content is very important when promoting XR business, so it is seeking cooperation with Meta. Combining the content, services and platform capabilities accumulated by LG through its TV business with Meta’s platform and ecosystem, it is expected to create a differentiated comprehensive ecosystem for new XR businesses. They also plan to combine Meta’s various core component technologies with LG Electronics’ product and quality capabilities to develop next-generation XR devices.

LG Electronics announced its future vision to transform into a smart living solutions company in 2030, connecting and expanding customers’ various spaces and experiences, from home interiors to commercial, mobile and virtual spaces. In addition, at the end of last year, LG Electronics reorganized and established an XR business unit within its HE business unit to accelerate new business plans in the virtual space field.
