U.S. lawmakers from both parties have introduced a bill that would require ByteDance to divest TikTok within six months or face a U.S. ban to address national security concerns over its Chinese ownership.

The bill is the first major legislative initiative in nearly a year aimed at addressing the issue. Lawmakers said TikTok could threaten U.S. national security. The White House stressed the importance of the bill, but the Civil Liberties Union called it unconstitutional. The bill would require TikTok to be divested and its app banned, but would not take measures against individual users.

The legislation requires Senate approval and will be voted on after committee consideration. The bill is intended to strengthen the legal handling of TikTok issues and address its potential national security risks.
