Thailand has called on Australia to slow down its emissions standards plans to avoid damaging Southeast Asian car exports.

Thailand exports 200,000 vehicles to Australia each year, many of which are high-emission pickup trucks. Thailand plans to convert 30% of its cars to electric by 2030.

The Australian Prime Minister stated that the standards will be implemented in 2025. Opposition parties worry the standards will raise prices and reduce pick-up choice. The auto industry’s chamber supports standards but demands a balance to avoid price increases and accommodate consumer choice.
