According to news, former Apple chief designer Jony Ive is negotiating with OpenAI to jointly develop an “artificial intelligence iPhone” consumer device. According to the Financial Times, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has enlisted the help of LoveFrom (Ive’s company) to develop the brand’s first consumer device. At the same time, ARM, a chip design company with a US$1 billion investment from Japan’s SoftBank Group, will also join the team. However, product scope narrowing and development negotiations are still in the early stages, involving a number of different ideas.

Sources indicate that a formal agreement could take months to reach, and it would be years before any products are delivered to consumers. Ive served as Apple’s chief design officer from 1997 to 2019 and played a key role in the design of products such as the iPhone and MacBook.
