Concrete is the second most used material after water, but its production accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions annually, four times that of air travel. Swedish start-up Cemvision has designed a cleaner cement production process that uses by-products instead of limestone to reduce carbon emissions by 95%.

Their demonstration plant has come online in Poland, producing 4,000 tons of cement per year and powered by biofuel. Cemvision is developing a kiln that uses renewable electricity. They received an investment of 10 million euros and signed their first customer LKAB. The company’s cement can be applied directly to existing infrastructure and is as strong and durable as regular cement.

Unlike other startups, Cemvision sells products directly to consumers, has huge market potential, and has received high attention from investors.
