Tesla requires North American customers to conduct a full self-driving technology demonstration before delivery to show its actual effect. Elon Musk issued a memo asking Tesla stores to install and activate the latest FSD software and take customers for a short test drive.

The service, which costs an additional $12,000, unlocks full self-driving capabilities, including self-driving on city streets and the vehicle’s ability to recognize stop signs.

Tesla’s Autopilot and FSD technologies have been controversial and have been the subject of formal investigations, including allegations of accidents and advertising language deception.
