Japan has announced plans to develop a new generation of passenger aircraft over the next ten years, aiming to improve technological competitiveness and promote the decarbonization of air transport, which is expected to require a total investment of 5 trillion yen (approximately US$33 billion).

This comes after an attempt led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was canceled after technical glitches and delivery delays. Japan aims to lead in carbon-neutral technology and plans to work with global companies to develop narrow-body aircraft, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister said.

While the move faces cost and technical challenges, experts believe Japan is ready to meet the challenge.
