Google to delete incognito search data

Google agrees to delete large amounts of search data to resolve a lawsuit over tracking privacy. Under the settlement, Google must delete billions of data records related to the use of Chrome’s incognito mode. The historic agreement requires tech companies to be honest with users about their data collection and use.

A judge will decide on July 30 whether to approve the settlement, and Google welcomed the resolution, saying it has always believed the lawsuit was without merit. The plaintiffs claim that Chrome’s incognito mode led users to mistakenly believe that their online behavior was not being tracked, while internal Google emails revealed the opposite.

The settlement also requires Google to block third-party cookies by default for the next five years, an important step because cookies are heavily regulated, such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and California’s regulations.
