Australian household spending increased 3.6% year-on-year in February

The latest report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that household expenditure increased by 3.6% in February this year compared with the same period last year.

Transportation expenditure increased by 12.3%, of which motor fuel prices increased by 4.1%. Spending on discretionary goods and services fell 0.2%, while non-discretionary spending increased 6.9%, reflecting changes in consumer behavior amid cost-of-living pressures.

Household spending increased in all states and territories, with South Australia recording the largest increase of 7.9%. A Senate inquiry into the pricing and market influence of major supermarkets has been launched amid rising costs of living, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has directed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to conduct a price inquiry into supermarkets.
