The Finnish subsidiary of German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has begun statutory negotiations to lay off 450 of its approximately 2,000 employees due to poor market conditions.

The company said the permanent layoffs will affect 450 people, while a further 900 people will be affected by other measures, including temporary layoffs and changes to working hours.

Due to the suspension of cruises due to the new crown epidemic, the company has had to adjust its order book and decided to reduce the number of large cruise ships built each year.

Jan Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, said that the epidemic has completely changed the situation, and the drop in demand needs to be adapted to the order volume.
