Malaysian Minister of Communications and Digital (KKD) Fahmi Fadzil said that he will discuss the supervision of TikTok Shop with relevant ministries and agencies. Previously, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Zhang Nianqun met with TikTok representatives and received basic information about the platform’s demographic data and products sold.

Fahmi said discussions will be held in consultation with other ministries and agencies as regulating network usage is mainly the responsibility of KKD and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), while other issues fall under the jurisdiction of other ministries such as the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and Enterprises Ministry of Development and Cooperation.

Fahmi said the government would hold discussions before finalizing action. He also mentioned complaints about TikTok’s restrictions on discussing the Palestinian issue, as well as MCMC’s discussions with TikTok operators, and was not satisfied with TikTok’s response. In addition, he emphasized the need for stronger supervision and expressed concern that TikTok has not yet appointed a representative in Malaysia.
