Volvo plans to become an all-electric carmaker by 2030 while becoming carbon neutral by 2040. They achieve this by optimizing manufacturing processes and increasing the use of recyclable, sustainable materials.

The new EX30 EV represents an important step in this direction for Volvo. The subcompact SUV will be produced in a Chinese factory, with an estimated 25% of aluminum and 17% of steel being recycled in the vehicle’s structure. Materials used inside include recycled polyester, recycled plastic, linen and more, reducing the carbon footprint. To achieve the lower price some interior parts feel a bit cheap.

The EX30 starts at $36,245, making it Volvo’s least expensive model. The powertrain includes single-motor and dual-motor versions, with excellent acceleration performance and an estimated driving range of 275 miles (442 kilometers) for the single-motor SUV and 265 miles (426 kilometers) for the AWD version, both figures exceeding the EX30 The main competitor is the electric Audi Q4 E-Tron’s EPA range. The vehicle performs well on both city and country roads.

All in all, the EX30 is an affordable electric car that demonstrates Volvo’s commitment to sustainable materials and carbon neutrality.
