U.S. oil company ExxonMobil plans to produce lithium, a core component of rechargeable batteries, in southern Arkansas by 2027.

The company said it will use traditional oil and gas drilling methods to extract lithium-rich brine from the Arkansas underground, and then extract and convert the lithium into battery-grade materials. ExxonMobil aims to produce enough lithium by 2030 to power more than 1 million electric vehicles per year.

ExxonMobil plays a leading role in paving the way for electrification and remains the world’s leading fossil fuel producer even as the company takes steps toward clean energy.
