Microsoft has launched two custom-designed computing chips called Maia and Cobalt to reduce the cost of artificial intelligence services.

The chips will support Microsoft’s subscription software products and Azure cloud services. Maia chips are designed to run large language models and are used to support Microsoft Azure OpenAI services. Cobalt is manufactured using Arm Holdings technology and is a central processing unit (CPU). Microsoft plans to sell Cobalt directly to compete with Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Graviton series of chips.

Microsoft said the chip uses TSMC’s 5-nanometer manufacturing technology, but did not disclose more technical details.
