Whirlpool Corporation introduces SlimTech™ insulation technology, the first vacuum insulated structure (VIS) technology for refrigerators in North America. The technology represents a major advance in refrigeration technology, which has long relied on large pieces of polyurethane foam for insulation. By using a proprietary material that is vacuum-sealed inside the refrigerator door or on the side of the refrigerator, SlimTech™ insulation reduces wall thickness by up to 66%, increasing interior refrigerator capacity by up to 25%.

SlimTech™ insulation will debut on the doors of select JennAir® Luxury 30 Slimtech™ column refrigerators in 2024, and will be rolled out more broadly to KitchenAid refrigerators in the future, featuring the technology throughout the structure. The materials used in SlimTech™ insulation technology also have recycling potential, and Whirlpool is working to develop a path to recycle this material at the end of a refrigerator’s life, paving the way for a more circular future.
