Apple announced that it will be the first and largest customer of Amkor Technology’s $2 billion chip packaging factory in Arizona, supporting Apple’s efforts to ramp up production in the U.S. and increase supply chain resilience.

The new factory, which will employ about 2,000 people, will process Apple chips produced at TSMC’s factory and is expected to be in production in the next two to three years. This will be the largest outsourced advanced packaging facility in the U.S., supporting the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. Apple’s chief operating officer said the partnership will provide the largest packaging facility in the United States.

Amkor said it has applied for funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to enhance U.S. competitiveness, innovation and national security in the semiconductor industry.
