Air New Zealand, which plans to be the first airline to use electric aircraft, has placed an order for electric ALIA aircraft from US Beta Technologies, with plans to enter the fleet in 2026.

The Chief Sustainability Officer said it would initially work with New Zealand Post for domestic freight services. The ALIA battery can be fully charged in 1 hour, with a flight range of up to 480 kilometers and a top speed of 270 kilometers per hour, initially for a 150 km route.

Airlines want the move to boost low-emission aircraft operations and plan to use larger, next-generation aircraft after 2030. The purchase of ALIA is part of the airline’s decarbonization plan, with the airport expected to be announced in early 2024.
