Foldable smartphones hit a record high in the third quarter of 2023, with shipments reaching 7 million units, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 215% and a year-on-year increase of 16%.
This growth was driven by Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, with Samsung leading the foldable market with 72% share, although this was down slightly from 86% last year. DSCC forecasts a 35% seasonal decline in the fourth quarter of 2023, but shipments will increase 47% over last year.
As competitors rise, Samsung’s share is expected to drop to 42%. Huawei Mate X5 may become the second best-selling model after Z Flip 5. Full-year foldable phone shipments are expected to grow 23% to 15.8 million units.
In terms of foldable panels, shipments in the third quarter reached 8.9 million units, a record high, with Samsung Display leading the way, but BOE is expected to surpass Samsung in the fourth quarter.
