According to Chinese customs data, China’s imports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment increased significantly in October, reaching US$4.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 80%. Analysts said the surge reflects efforts by Chinese semiconductor companies to step up stockpiling of critical manufacturing equipment, especially equipment used in silicon wafers, integrated circuits and flat-panel displays, ahead of new U.S. export rules.

The new rules further limit the ability of the United States and its allies to export advanced semiconductor technology to China, particularly advanced lithography systems for patterning integrated circuits. While China’s semiconductor imports have fallen 12.1% in unit terms so far this year, the data points to a modest recovery in end-use demand, including for products such as smartphones.
