U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said she was discussing with Nvidia about selling AI chips to China, but stressed that the sale of the most advanced semiconductors would not be allowed.

Raimondo noted that Nvidia could provide AI chips to China, but not the most sophisticated and processing power, to prevent them from being used to train cutting-edge models. She met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to emphasize compliance with the rules.

Raimondo said the Commerce Department was working with Nvidia but warned that it would take steps if chips were redesigned around the rules to bypass the restrictions.

She also called on Congress to pass legislation to address the potential threat to national security posed by foreign apps such as TikTok.
