General Motors announced yesterday plans to lay off 1,300 jobs at two Michigan plants. Among them, the Orion assembly plant will lay off 945 workers, end production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, and switch to electric truck production.

The Lanzing Grande River plant laid off 350 jobs and stopped production of the Chevrolet Camaro, but will continue to produce the Cadillac CT4 and CT5. Hourly workers who are laid off will find positions in other factories. General Motors CEO Mary Bora said that delaying the production of electric pickup trucks will improve truck production efficiency and reduce costs to increase profits.

GM plans to start production of electric trucks by the end of 2025. Ford also plans to cut production of the F-150 Lightning EV truck to about 1,600 units per week starting in January 2024, half of what it previously planned.
