Sony announced that PlayStation 5 sales exceeded 50 million units, emphasizing its strong performance in 2023. Although global supply chain issues and chip shortages affected sales in 2020, the PS5 reached the 50 million unit sales milestone almost at the same time as the PS4.
Company President Jim Ryan said that there is sufficient supply of PS5 in the 2023 holiday season. Since the release of the first PlayStation in 1994, Sony has developed into a giant in the field of console games, with market revenue expected to exceed US$53 billion this year. The PS5 sales milestone marks Sony’s game success in the field.
Microsoft’s Xbox has become PlayStation’s main competitor. Although PS5 sales exceed the latest Xbox, Microsoft has strengthened its market position through large-scale acquisitions and other means.
