Hyundai Motor showcased the second generation of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi Supernal S-A2 at CES 2024.

The South Korean company plans to launch the battery-powered aircraft in 2028, which can accommodate four passengers and a pilot. Eight rotors provide thrust for vertical takeoff and landing and horizontal flight.

Designed for urban operation, the noise inside and outside is lower than that of traditional helicopters, with the internal noise being only 65 decibels. It has a flight range of 25 to 40 miles, a top speed of 120 miles per hour, and a cruising altitude of 1,500 feet.

Supernal emphasized that the S-A2 does not replace commercial aviation, but supplements it, providing fast short-distance transportation. The modular design allows the aircraft to be upgraded as battery technology advances.

Hyundai plans to make its first commercial flight in 2028, demonstrating the real-world application of electric aircraft technology.
