Google plans to adopt TSMC’s 3nm Tensor chips on its smartphones, instead of relying on Samsung. The chip, which could be the Tensor G5 (codenamed “Laguna”), is expected to be released in 2025 and uses TSMC’s 3nm process.

This marks the first time Google has made a custom chip design to gain more control. The move to TSMC could give Google a more powerful and efficient Pixel phone. However, the cooperation with Samsung will continue, and the upcoming Tensor G4 will be powered by Samsung’s 4nm process.

Google emphasizes its focus on AI capabilities, which is in line with its focus on AI capabilities in Pixel devices.
