An organization representing more than 80 Spanish media organizations has filed a €550 million lawsuit against Instagram owner Meta, accusing it of breaching EU personal data protection regulations.

The accusation alleges that Meta “systematically” used users’ personal data before July 2023, violating EU regulations that require companies to obtain user consent when using personal data in advertising. The lawsuit claims that this practice creates unfair competition in the advertising market because Meta is able to use “illegally obtained” data to provide unfairly personalized ads.

Spain’s AMI newspaper publishing association said Meta ignored data protection regulations to establish a dominant position in the advertising market, causing obvious damage to Spanish media. Meta has not yet responded to a request for comment.
