The National Irrigation Authority (NIA) of the Philippines has signed two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) aimed at expediting irrigation development and leveraging NIA assets for renewable energy development.

NIA signed a memorandum of understanding with BPE Corp. (BPEC) and China Railway Construction Corporation to jointly conduct a feasibility study on the pilot installation of a micro-hydro power system at the south weir of the Angat Maasim River Irrigation System (AMRIS). The project is called “Project GENIHAR” (Generation-Irrigation-Harvest). The signed MoU represents NIA and BPEC’s joint efforts to optimize the use of irrigation water and promote the development of renewable energy.

Key projects of the cooperation include the Ilocos Norte-Abra Sur Ilocos Irrigation Project, the Alto Banaao Irrigation Project and the Tumaini River Irrigation Project. The MoU symbolizes the efforts of both parties in promoting public-private partnership (PPP).
