The United Kingdom, France, the United States, and tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta signed a joint statement acknowledging the need to do more to counter the malicious use of cyberespionage tools.

Thirty-five countries signed the declaration at a conference hosted by the United Kingdom and France to tackle the misuse of spyware, such as listening on phone calls, stealing photos and remotely controlling cameras and microphones.

The statement warned that the fast-growing spyware market raises concerns about national security and human rights, and calls for the lawful and responsible use of these tools, increased oversight, and greater transparency for commercial spyware vendors.

In addition, the U.S. announced new visa restrictions for individuals who misuse commercial spyware.
