TSMC plans to build a second chip manufacturing plant in Japan, with an investment of more than RM25 billion. The plant is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2027 and is expected to have a monthly production capacity of more than 100,000 12-inch wafers and create 3,400 jobs.

The move is a victory for the Japanese government to increase domestic chip production. Toyota will join TSMC’s Kumamoto subsidiary, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (JASM), as a new investor.

In addition, TSMC is also considering building a third Japanese factory to meet the needs of the global semiconductor supply chain.
