U.S. may sanction Chinese semiconductor companies linked to Huawei

The Biden administration plans to impose trade sanctions on four Chinese companies related to Huawei’s semiconductor manufacturing in an effort to limit Beijing’s artificial intelligence and semiconductor ambitions.

The move reflects rising tensions between China and the United States and U.S. efforts to curb Huawei’s global influence. This is expected to further intensify restrictions on China’s semiconductor capabilities and increase pressure on Huawei.

Companies that may be subject to sanctions include chipmakers Qingdao XinEn, SwaySure, Shenzhen Pengsheng Technology Co., Ltd. and Changxin Storage Technology Co., Ltd. U.S. officials have also urged allies to tighten trade sanctions against Huawei.

The United States still has the power to sanction companies deemed to pose a potential threat to national security, although it is unclear whether the Commerce Department has enough evidence to link the companies to Huawei.
