The White House announced that U.S. President Joe Biden will allocate $7 billion for residential solar projects to provide power to millions of low-income households in celebration of Earth Day. The move marks the start of a week of events aimed at promoting the Biden administration’s initiatives on climate change.

Biden will unveil the news at Prince William Forest Park in Virginia and announce that applications are open to join the U.S. Climate Corps. The initiative aims to help prepare young people for jobs in climate-related industries, as younger voters are often more concerned about climate change. The $7 billion in funding will create 200,000 jobs and save participating families approximately $400 per year.

The funding will be distributed to 60 state and local agencies and nonprofits through the Solar for All grant competition to help poor communities go solar and save money on their energy bills. Biden’s goal is to direct 40% of federal clean energy investment proceeds to disadvantaged communities.
