Meta Platforms has announced the first sharing of its Quest headset operating system with rival device manufacturers as it expands its presence in the virtual and mixed reality space.

Meta Horizon OS will provide gesture recognition, pass-through, scene understanding and spatial anchor functions. Partners include Asus and Lenovo, with devices expected to be available for specific events.

The company also plans to launch a limited edition Quest headset inspired by Microsoft’s Xbox. This shows Meta CEO Zuckerberg’s ambition to power VR and MR devices.

Meta’s VR business benefits from the Android-based Meta Horizon operating system. Asus’s Republic of Gamers is developing gaming headsets, and Lenovo is developing MR equipment.

Adoption of VR and MR headsets has been limited so far, but Meta faces increasing competitive pressure, especially from Apple and Google.
