Universal Music Group and TikTok have reached a new licensing agreement that will allow Universal Music’s songs and artists to return to the platform. After the expiration of the previous agreement, TikTok deleted Universal Music’s content because the two parties did not agree on royalties, AI protection and user safety.

TikTok is considered the main source for young people to discover music. Universal said TikTok accounts for only 1% of its revenue and pays less compared to YouTube. Taylor Swift allowed some songs to return to TikTok, reducing her bargaining power.

Universal worries that AI-generated recordings in TikTok will impact the income of composers and performers. Concerns about AI are growing, with a coalition of artists urging tech companies to use AI responsibly.

There are doubts over TikTok’s long-term future as the US president signed a law requiring its Chinese owners to sell their US assets within 270 days.
