A new U.S. government order could hold Amazon responsible for the safety of goods sold on its site to outside vendors, including products shipped through Amazon Fulfillment.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is preparing to classify Amazon’s online retail business as a merchandise distributor, similar to traditional retailers. The measure has an impact on Amazon’s global business, especially in the face of potential legal action and competition from Chinese e-commerce platform Temu.

Amazon said it is concerned about safety issues, emphasizing measures to monitor and prevent non-compliant products and working with government agencies.
