Amazon has announced the launch of a new prescription delivery service, called Prime Air, which is currently limited to customers in College Town, Texas. The service utilizes drones and is able to deliver medication in less than an hour after a user places an order. Amazon says it offers a total of 500 different drugs to treat diseases such as flu, pneumonia and asthma. The medications will be packaged by Amazon’s pharmacists and delivered by drones. Kalsi Hendrickson, director of project management at Prime Air, said drone flights avoid traffic jams and provide customers with speed and convenience to meet their health needs.

The drone will fly between about 130 and 400 feet in altitude, avoiding power lines and other obstacles while using built-in software to identify objects and features. Upon arrival at its destination, the drone will automatically land and release the medication before returning to the Amazon fulfillment center. In 2020, the Federal Aviation Administration approved Amazon to use drones as part of its delivery fleet. Amazon must provide evidence to the government that the drone can safely deliver the package, including detailed documentation and flight plans. This move marks Amazon’s innovation in the field of fast shipping, especially for urgently needed medicines.
