Amazon was ordered to pay $46.7 million for infringing four VoiceBox patents related to providing network-coordinated conversational services, natural language processing for linking ads to speech-based input, and conversational voice user interfaces.
The court ordered payment to be made through royalties rather than a lump sum. VoiceBox claims to have developed similar prototypes before Amazon Echo and Alexa were released. The verdict came after a jury found Amazon infringed. Amazon has the right to appeal, while VoiceBox can seek reimbursement of costs.
The verdict contrasts with a 2021 ruling that Amazon did not infringe IPA Technologies patents.
