Chanel Korea was fined by South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission for excessively collecting information on waiting customers at department stores.

The company claims to collect information to prevent daigou, but has been widely criticized for treating customers as potential criminals. The committee ruled that the company violated the Personal Information Protection Act and believed that the measures it took went beyond the reasonable scope of managing waiting customers.

Denying service to customers who do not consent to the collection of information also violates the law, the commission noted. The Commission emphasizes that companies should only collect the minimum personal information required for services, and this case reminds companies that they must not refuse to provide services on the grounds that they do not agree to the collection.
