Google has agreed to settle a consumer privacy lawsuit worth at least $5 billion.

The lawsuit accuses Google of tracking the data of users who use “private browsing mode” and are not logged into their Google accounts. Court documents confirm the preliminary agreement, with plaintiffs’ attorneys seeking at least $5,000 in compensation for each affected user. The lawsuit originated in 2020 and claims millions of people were affected.

Google and consumer lawyers have so far not responded to requests for comment.
