Toyota is recalling more than 135,000 Prius hybrid vehicles in Japan due to a problem with the rear door handle that may cause the switch to malfunction, causing the rear door to suddenly open. The scope of the recall includes vehicles produced from November 2022 to April 2024, and there have been no accidents so far.

It’s unclear whether Prius sold overseas are also affected. Supplier Tokai Rika said the recall would cost 11 billion yen. Japan’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology pointed out that the rear door handle switch has insufficient waterproof performance, which may cause a short circuit and, in the worst case, cause the door to open. Toyota has notified the Department of Transportation and is offering free repairs to Prius owners.
