EU to approve Apple opening NFC technology to rivals

Apple is gradually opening its ecosystem to EU competitors.

The European Commission plans to approve Apple’s iPhone NFC chip policy changes to promote competition in the contactless payment market. This means that third-party apps can become the default wallet app. Previously, Apple strictly controlled NFC chip access, resulting in Apple Pay dominating the market.

The move comes in response to previous accusations from the European Commission to avoid potentially huge fines. Apple wants to change the policy, but developers need Apple authorization and compliance with industry standards.
