Bonn-based startup Midel Photonics has raised €1 million ($1.1 million) in seed funding from High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and industry experts Thomas Merk and Markus Dilger.

Founded in 2022, Midel Photonics focuses on developing novel laser beam shaping technologies to improve the efficiency of material processing, such as microchip cutting, electric vehicle welding, and display manufacturing. Funds will be used to promote the technology.

Its laser beam shaping technology employs a micro-layering technique called Midel to create a continuous diffractive optical element that customizes the beam profile of industrial lasers to improve edge sharpness, intensity uniformity, and other shapes. Key benefits include improved laser processing quality and efficiency, agile solution development, rapid custom production, and easy integration into laser systems.

The company claims that its approach is unique and derived from quantum optics research at the University of Bonn.
