Amazon will invest US$500 million to build a distribution center in Sydney to strengthen its service capabilities in Australia.

These include a robotics fulfillment center that is more than four times the size of the Sydney Opera House and a facility the size of four and a half rugby fields. The goal is to speed up delivery of big-ticket items like TVs and furniture. It plans to employ nearly 1,100 staff and provide benefits such as private healthcare subsidies and maternity pay.

Amazon said the move was to meet growing consumer demand in Australia while giving back to local communities. The Goodman Group chief executive said it was in response to months of planning and strategic investment in western Sydney and would provide Amazon with the infrastructure it needs to expand.
