Shipments of smartphones supporting generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) are expected to increase dramatically over the next three years. Counterpoint Technology Market Research data shows that smartphones equipped with GenAI will account for 11% of overall shipments by 2024, and will exceed 550 million units by 2027, an increase of nearly 4 times.

It is expected that by 2027, GenAI smartphone installations will exceed 1 billion. These devices leverage large-scale, pre-trained generative AI models to perform context-aware tasks, process inputs such as text, images, and speech and generate a variety of outputs.

It is expected that 2025 will reach an inflection point, and GenAI smartphones will penetrate a wider range of price segments. Chipset companies such as MediaTek and Qualcomm are the first to embrace GenAI smartphones, with Qualcomm expected to take the lead in the AI SoC field in 2024.

Samsung will lead the GenAI smartphone OEM rankings in 2024, and Apple’s entry will also drive growth in this field.
