Penang remains Malaysia’s largest export destination in September

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM), Penang remained Malaysia’s largest export destination in September 2023, accounting for 34.6% of total exports. The next four states are Johor (19.3%), Selangor (17.1%), Sarawak (6.8%) and Kedah (5.0%). These five states together account for 82.8% of the country’s exports. .

In the latest statistics, Penang’s exports fell 10.1% year-on-year to RM43 billion, while imports fell 15.2% year-on-year to RM20.9 billion. Overall, Malaysia’s total trade volume in September 2023 reached RM224.4 billion, of which exports were RM124.4 billion and imports were RM100 billion. As most states experienced declines in exports and imports, national exports fell by 13.7% year-on-year and imports fell by 11.1%.

The figures reflect Malaysia’s trade activity between specific states, with Penang continuing to lead in exports.
