Malaysia and Singapore seek solutions for high-speed rail projects

Malaysian Transport Minister Loke Siew Hock said they are looking for appropriate financing options to support the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project and plan to discuss it with the Singaporean government once a solution is found.

The Malaysian government, through MyHSR Corp (Malaysian High Speed Rail Corporation), is currently issuing a request for information to private sector consortiums to receive concept proposals for the development and operation of high speed rail projects. Discussions will begin with the Singapore government once the RFP process is completed.

The high-speed rail project from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore had a bilateral agreement as early as 2016 and was originally scheduled to be completed in 2026. It will greatly shorten the travel time between the two places to 90 minutes. However, the project was canceled in January 2021, resulting in Malaysia having to pay RM320 million in compensation to Singapore. Loke Siu Fook said that the Malaysian government is willing to restart the high-speed rail project as long as it does not bear the cost.
