Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s subsidiary Petronas Suriname E&P BV successfully discovered oil in the Roystonea-1 exploration well in Block 52 in Suriname. The well was located 185 kilometers offshore in a water depth of 904 meters, with a total drilling depth of 5,315 meters and encountered multiple oil-bearing Campania sandstone reservoirs. Petronas said it is further evaluating the discovery’s potential and synergies with its previous Sloanea-1 exploration.

Datuk Adif Zulkifli, CEO of Petronas, said that the Roystonea-1 oil discovery is a positive development in the company’s differentiation strategy as an international upstream enterprise, focusing on the development of environmentally friendly oil and gas resources.

Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman, Vice President of Exploration of Suriname National Petroleum Company, said that the success of Roystonea-1 is expected to promote further exploration of hydrocarbon resources in surrounding areas, and promised to work closely with Petronas to unleash Suriname’s hydrocarbon potential.

Block 52 covers an area of 4,749 square kilometers and is located north of the coast of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, in the Suriname-Guyana basin. Petronas Suriname is the operator of Block 52 with a 50% participating interest. In addition, Suriname National Oil Company also has a 100% participating interest in Block 48, and a 30% non-operating participating interest in adjacent Block 53.
