Malaysia gears up for rise of artificial intelligence

The Malaysian government plans to change the technology landscape by emphasizing artificial intelligence (AI) and data unification, and amends three laws and regulations, including amending the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), introducing a new cybersecurity bill, and enacting the Comprehensive Data Protection Act , to promote the use of artificial intelligence within government and across government agencies.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the AI framework is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, which is looking at industry engagement and infrastructure development to support the development of AI. The government plans to introduce three key bills to parliament, including changes to the PDPA, a new cybersecurity bill and a comprehensive data protection law to achieve data harmonization and data portability.

Mahadhir Aziz, chief executive officer of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), highlighted the huge potential of artificial intelligence in government administration, emphasizing the importance of technological readiness and infrastructure development.
