Malaysian e-commerce earns RM1.1 trillion annually

A report from the Malaysian Bureau of Statistics shows that my country’s e-commerce revenue increased by 10.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022, reaching 291.7 billion ringgit, and the total annual revenue was nearly 1.1 trillion ringgit, a year-on-year increase of 6%. ​

Government-driven initiatives such as e-commerce gateways, investments in new companies, and improved communications and broadband networks have contributed to this growth. Statistics show that e-commerce revenue in 2021 increased by 23.9% year-on-year to RM1.037 trillion. Sales in the domestic market increased by 25.5% to RM932.7 billion, and sales in the international market increased by 11.9% to RM104.5 billion.

Both Internet and computer usage have increased, with network dominance increasing from 53.9% in 2019 to 63.3% in 2021.
