According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the number of unemployed people decreased by 0.5% in October 2023 from the previous month to 570,900. The unemployment rate remains at last September’s level of 3.4%.
Chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin pointed out that the actively unemployed accounted for 80.1% of the total, a decrease of 0.4% from 458,900 in the previous month. Those who have been unemployed for less than three months account for 61.6%, and those who have been unemployed for more than one year account for 6.2%. The number of people who believe that there are no job opportunities or that the unemployed are inactive decreased by 0.9% to 113,800.
In October, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 was 10.7%, or 313,300 people. The unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 30 fell to 6.6%, or 439,600 people.
