Japanese oil company Eneos and trading house Sumitomo Corporation plan to cooperate in producing environmentally friendly “green” hydrogen in Malaysia, mainly for export to Japan, to promote diversification of fuel supplies.

A cooperation agreement has been signed with SEDC Energy, a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, to build one of two green hydrogen plants in 2027 as part of the H2ornbill project. The project uses hydroelectrolysis to produce hydrogen and features carbon-neutral combustion.

SEDC Energy leads power procurement and hydrogen production, Eneos provides technical expertise, and Sumitomo Corporation is responsible for assessing project feasibility and financing.

This plan is to achieve the Japanese government’s annual hydrogen supply target of 3 million tons in 2030 and address the challenge of high renewable energy costs. Eneos is also working with Toyota and Woven Planet to advance green hydrogen production and use.
